  6.   I've been trying to translate some German letters from the teletext
  7. service on a German channel. I was bored... OKAY ?!?!?!?! Anyway...
  8. from what I can make out, it seems that most German satellite viewers
  9. are angry because they can't watch the English channels any-more. I'd
  10. just like to send a small message to those German and european people
  11. who can't watch the english channels on the Astra satellites :-

  13. Wake up ! You're getting the best deal - buy a dish and don't pay
  14. anything for the channels ! We have to pay to watch a shopping channel !
  15. Now come on ! Okay, so you get dubbed films but that's not my fault !
  16. I don't like learning languages... in fact, I still haven't mastered
  17. english ?!?! Don't think that everyone except the english are being
  18. "locked out" of these channels, IT'S JUST A WAY OF RAISING REVENUE !
  19. Please don't believe that Sky TV don't want you to see their
  20. programmes - I think they'd love the money !

  22. Sky TV do not have as many viewers as the German channels do - there
  23. are twice as many dish owners in Germany (thus explaining the German
  24. ads on MTV). German channels can support themselves through advertising,
  25. Sky can't. So we pay, and we still have to watch the adverts aswell.
  26. Good huh ? Anyway, I'm sure everyone has read (in this mag!) how pissed
  27. off all us dish-owners are at having to pay such a ridiculous price for
  28. average programming on Sky TV plus other channels that we don't watch.

  30. In the UK we have some small local cable companies, but they're running
  31. into problems as they start destroying water-pipes, sewage pipes, gas
  32. pipes, electricity cables and phone links. The cable companies can't do
  33. anything about this - some water pipes were laid in the Victorian era.
  34. One wrong move and "Bloggs Cable" get soaked in sewage. It's a lot easier
  35. to put cables down in some countries as there aren't gas pipes and
  36. everything is laid out better.

  38. So you see, we only have 4 national channels (and about 13 regional
  39. companies) so to the UK public Sky TV is the easiest way to get more
  40. channels. It costs to buy crap American progra.... erm.. I mean.. good
  41. quality American programmes, so we have to foot some of the bill. So
  42. Sky scrambled the movie channels..... then the comedy channel
  43. (remember that ?), then Sky Sports (just as people were getting it for
  44. the footie - smart move by Sky ?!), then ..... everything.... basically.
  45. But, with rich American business-men (Hello Mr. Turner - Owner of CNN,
  46. Cartoon Network and TNT) giving us free channels, there is now a bit -
  47. and it is a bit - of competition for Sky. If there was more 
  48. english-language satellite competition (a channel that would refuse
  49. scramble or charge a lower rate) then we would soon see the subscription
  50. price drop. At the moment though, Sky have a monopoly in the
  51. subscription area of European satellite TV so..... we'll have to live
  52. with it or go back to the CRAP 4 channels that we usually have !
